History
History
Georgian State Teaching University of Physical Education and Sports is currently the non-alternative higher education institution in Georgia in all sports.
The history of the university begins on June 21, 1935, when by the decision of the Government of Georgia, the Department of Physical Culture was established at Tbilisi State University, and later it was renamed the Faculty of Physical Culture. Its first dean, Doctor of Medicine and Professor, initiator and head of the Tbilisi Scientific-Research Institute of Physical Culture, Giorgi Mghebrishvili, has made a great contribution to the establishment and further development of the faculty. The latter was supported by Georgian Honored Athletes, Teachers and Coaches, including Giorgi Merkviladze, Mikheil Gorgadze, Lev Golovnia, Aleksandre Bakradze, Mikheil Tikanadze, Giga Meunargia, Ivane Beritashvili (Founder of the School of Psychology in Georgia).
In 1938, the Faculty of Physical Education was separated from Tbilisi State University and became an independent institution - the State University of Physical Culture. Its first director was Tedo Skhirtladze. Despite numerous challenges, including the lack of auditoriums and inadequate infrastructure in the former factory building, the University overcame these problems and moved on to the next stage of development.
During World War II, the university changed its profile and made great efforts to help those injured in the war. University lecturers and thousands of students were trained to conduct individual sessions in gymnastics and physiotherapy for soldiers housed in hospitals.
In 1955, the University of Sport moved to a building specially made for it. The University was equipped with the appropriate curriculum: laboratories and infrastructure for scientific activities, halls for various sports, including gymnastics, volleyball and basketball; treadmills, volleyball and football stadiums, tennis courts, etc .; A ski base and a swimming pool were constructed in Bakuriani. The branches of the university operated in Batumi, Sokhumi, Kutaisi and Tskhinvali.
Since its inception, the University's main goal has been to train highly qualified coaches and teachers. During its 80 years of existence, the University of Sports has trained more than 20,000 teachers, coaches and sports medicine specialists, some of whom work in Georgia and some in various countries around the world.
The graduates of the University of Sport are world-class athletes and record holders of European, World and Olympic Championships. Among them: Davit Tsimakuridze, Medea Jugheli, Givi Kartozia, Mirian Tsalkalamanidze, Nugzar Asatiani, Nino Dumbadze, Vitali Daraselia, Ramaz Shengelia and others.
In 2007, by the decision of the government, the University of Sport merged with Ilia State University, however, the existing infrastructure was not sufficient for the full functioning of the University. In 2018, the University of Sports was again established as an independent institute and continues to function today under the name of the Georgian State Teaching University of Physical Education and Sports.
In 2014, the university successfully passed the authorization and after a 7-year pause, started accepting students.
Since 2015, the University of Sport is a member of the International Association of Physical Culture and Sports Universities (IASUNI) and participates in scientific congresses planned by the Association.
Currently, the University of Sport offers bachelor and master programs, as well as one-year (60-credit) accredited educational programs.
